Students and staff at Fall Creek Intermediate (FCI) packed the school gymnasium Tuesday afternoon, sensing something special was about to happen. As the energy built, students broke into a loud, unified chant: “Mr. Teal! Mr. Teal!”
That chant was for Michael Teal, a beloved math and science teacher at FCI. Moments later, the gym erupted in cheers as it was announced that Mr. Teal had been named the Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools District Teacher of the Year.
A video tribute, produced by HSE Community Relations Director Emily Abbotts, featured heartfelt praise from students and colleagues, highlighting Mr. Teal’s dedication over the past 10 years to making every day a meaningful learning experience for his students.
HSE Superintendent Dr. Patrick Mapes presented the award, while HSE Schools Foundation Executive Director Justin Hirnisey followed with a $500 check—funded through a special endowment established by former Superintendent Dr. Allen Bourff.
When handed the microphone to address the crowd, Mr. Teal simply said, “Hello!”—a single word that drew laughter and applause. For those who know him, that moment said it all.
He went on to thank his students, colleagues, and the school community, describing the honor as “super-overwhelming.”
As District Teacher of the Year, Michael Teal will now represent HSE Schools in the competition for Indiana State Teacher of the Year.
