About

LarryInFishers.com was created by Larry Lannan, a Fishers resident since 1991.  After a 28 year career as a government employee, Larry decided to retire from the civil service in 2011. Larry was an award-winning journalist before entering government service.  Larry found a gap in the news coverage in Fishers, so he decided to try his hand at starting a Web page devoted to news of Fishers only.  He began attending local government meetings. Larry has been a contributing columnist for Current in Fishers, a weekly publication mailed to everyone with a Fishers address.  He has also done some freelance writing for the Indianapolis Business Journal.  This blog had a news-gathering partnership with the Hamilton County Reporter newspaper from February 10, 2017 through July 4, 2021.  Currently, Larry writes a news summary for the monthly publication Fishers Magazine.    Beginning in 2012, Larry began writing about local news and announced the end of the news blog in March of 2020 after 8 years.  Larry saw the need to continue writing and podcasting about news in and around Fishers when the novel coronavirus pandemic upended life, especially after somehow recovering from a bout with COVID-19 himself.  So Larry continues blogging about local news, at an albeit slower pace that before.

Thank you for visiting this blog!

  1. Mr. Lannan,

Thanks for such a clear description of the financial situation of HSE Schools. I hope it becomes clear to the community that the school district has worked hard to be responsible in these last few years during unforeseen circumstances. Teachers have taken significant hit as you mentioned with health care. I hope the community will be supportive of the referendum! We need to address the growing class sizes to maintain quality in this community.

    1. Hello Larry,

Love your blog. However, please correct the name of Structure Point in your State Road 37 improvements story to American Structurepoint. Thank you and keep up the great work!

  2. Larry,
I know you have been present at the committee meetings and council meeting which have be hearing the request from Corby Thompson to rezone and have approved a new development Whelchel Springs. My husband and I own the property immediately across the road from one of the entrances of the proposed new neighborhood. I am sure you have heard the developer make promises to both committees a

  3. I have only recently happened upon your blog and email updates and I must say that as a Fishers resident of 17 years and someone who really cares about the area I feel that you are an incredibly valuable asset for our community.

    Many thanks!

  4. Greetings,
I was just reading through the agenda for the upcoming Fishers Board of Public Works, and I notice that Fishers is planning to purchase a CCTV camera truck.

What in the world would Fishers need this for? The cost is over $200,000.

Thank you for keeping us in the know of what is going on.

  5. Hello, I enjoy your reports. Did you do a story on the extra wheel tax added to my vehicle registration 2018. My comment is the tax is supposed to go towards fixing roads, right? Maybe? I live on Howe Rd south of 146th. Big pot holes on the road so I contact Fishers DPW and response is thats the responsibility of Noblesville. I feel shafted paying extra tax to fishers and told the road next to my house is not Fishers problem. Maybe that is worthy of a story.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I am following-up on your question. Once I have more information, I will let you know.

  6. Larry,
You wrote a story about Katie Luck of SCE and her 2nd grade class’s energy conservation project. They presented what they had done to HSE school board on April 11th. I wanted to let you won Indiana Primary School of the Year and National Primary Rookie of the Year by the National Energy Education Development Project.

  7. Hi Larry,

I’m curious how it could be, considering your many years as a journalist, that, as you indicated in your recent podcast with a candidate for Fishers Clerk-Treasurer, you have never filed a public records/freedom-of-information request with any public agency. Journalists seem to universally extol the value of open records. Was there never an occasion in which you sought to probe an issue beyond what agency officials encouraged you to believe?

    1. Hi Clarke,

Thanks for the comment. I wasn’t bragging about never needing to file a Freedom of Information Act request, it’s just that here in Fishers, whenever I ask for information, I get it. Not every local government is like that. Also, it would take a compelling reason for me to file such a request. This is a volunteer effort for me so I have no legal or editorial help, I would be handling this all by myself.

  8. Dear Larry,
I was introduced to your site by friends and family living in Fishers as a way of helping me understand what they and their children are dealing with.
What a truly excellent resource you are and a true gift to your community. I wish mine had someone like you.
As someone who was educated in the once great IPS system and our 2 flagship universities (IU & Purdue) the education of ALL our children is a high value for our family and friends.
After 30+ years away, I recently moved back to Indy for my elderly parents. I had the wonderful experience of living those 30+ years in the Twin Cities (St.Paul/ Mpls.)

Minnesota had struggled with many of the same issues over education and funding that Indiana and her communities face today.
Shortly before I moved to Minnesota the State Legislature enacted what some in the nation called the Minnesota Miracle and it became a model for some locations. It worked so well for so long and contributed to the high level of educational attainment for Minnesota citizens, thus contributing to a very productive economy.

Sadly, over time and with successive Legislatures, big pieces have been either abandoned or undone. However, I still believe that success is still worthy of a “look-see” by other Communities and States. Here are a couple of links:

  9. Just read about your Blog in the IBJ that arrived today. We moved to Fishers around 1983, then raised our children through the HSE school system. After the youngest graduated from college, we moved to East Carmel. I would like to get notification of your new posts and continue following you. It is very exciting to see how vibrant the town center has become. Thank goodness Walt Kelly did not win that first Mayor election! He did enough damage while in office.

  10. Larry, you do cover this periodically but it seems like the railroad to trail conversion is going ahead of schedule, full steam (no pun) ahead? Even the Noblesville portion had their tracks removed. Is the city pushing the trail to be finished by next spring/summer provided the weather cooperates?

    1. Hi Lex, yes, I have been reporting on this extensively. The removal of the tracks in Fishers (can’t speak for Noblesville) began this summer and is complete except along streets & they will be removed as the trail is constructed. The first phase of the trail will begin construction this fall…the bond issue funding it is part of the 2019 city budget. The first phase goes from 106th Street to 126th Street and is projected to be completed in 2020,

  11. You should write about how the mayor wants to get rid of Ritchey Woods and how Fishers is wanting to develop Nonie Werbe Krauss Nature Preserve.
