A familiar name to Indiana college football fans could be joining the Fishers Freight for the 2027 Indoor Football League season.

The Indoor Football League’s transaction listing shows veteran quarterback Nate Davis signing with the Fishers Freight on Thursday, October 8.

As of Saturday morning, the Freight had not issued an official announcement of the signing, and a request for comment from LarryInFishers.com had not received a response.

Felix Harper, Freight starting quarterback in 2026 and part of the 2025 season, has recently signed with the San Antonio Gunslingers, based on IFL transaction reports.

If the transaction results in Davis joining the team, Fishers would be adding one of the more accomplished quarterbacks in indoor football, a player with a remarkable career stretching from Ball State University to the National Football League and more than a decade of indoor football competition.

Davis, 39, played three seasons at Ball State from 2006 through 2008, becoming one of the most successful quarterbacks in the school’s history.

His biggest season came in 2008, when he led the Cardinals to a perfect 12-0 regular-season record and a national ranking as high as 12th. Ball State finished 12-2 following losses to Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference championship game and Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl.

Davis was named the 2008 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year and finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

During his three seasons in Muncie, Davis threw for 9,233 yards and 74 touchdowns, completing 678 passes. He was the first quarterback in Ball State history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in consecutive seasons.

His success attracted the attention of NFL scouts, and the San Francisco 49ers selected Davis in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, 171st overall.

Although he never established himself as an NFL starting quarterback, he spent time with San Francisco, Seattle and Indianapolis before building an extensive career in arena and indoor football.

That proved to be a productive second act.

Davis played for teams in Amarillo, Texas, and other indoor football markets before joining the Duke City Gladiators. In 2021, he was named the Indoor Football League’s Offensive Player of the Year after throwing a then-league-record 79 touchdown passes and earning first-team All-IFL honors.

He later joined the San Diego Strike Force during the 2023 season.

In 2024, Davis helped guide San Diego to the Western Conference championship game. The Strike Force returned to that game in 2025 and again in 2026.

Davis remained productive in 2026. In the opening round of the playoffs, he threw five touchdown passes, all to receiver Jalen Sample, as San Diego defeated the Tucson Sugar Skulls 54-47.

The Strike Force’s season ended with a 43-37 loss to Arizona in the Western Conference championship game.

A September report in California noted that San Diego was re-signing several players for the following season, but Davis was not among those announced.

Now, the IFL transaction listing suggests his next stop could be Fishers.

For the Freight, which plays its home games at the Fishers Event Center, acquiring a quarterback with Davis’ experience could be an important move as the franchise prepares for its third season in the league.

Davis would bring both familiarity with Indiana football and extensive experience directing the high-scoring offenses characteristic of the indoor game.

However, until the Freight confirms the transaction, questions remain about Davis’ role with the team and the organization’s plans for the quarterback position.
