Saxony Area To Add New Urology Medical Facility

The Saxony area of Fishers near I-69 Exit 210 will be adding yet another medical building to the many facilities already located there.

Urology of Indiana announced Tuesday the groundbreaking of its Center of Excellence at 14300 E. 138th Street.  The company cites increased demand for urological services in this area as the main reason for the new building .

The 22,000 square-foot office will accommodate up to 12 urologic providers and multiple urologic service lines at one time. Urology of Indiana anticipates opening the building to patients in November 2019. Northwest Radiology Network is partnering with Urology of Indiana to offer advanced imaging services in the adjacent building.

“The MedTech Park campus will be a destination for medical services, not only for Fishers but for Central Indiana, and the addition of Urology of Indiana and Northwest Radiology perpetuates that vision,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness in a city news release. “Their mission to invest in cutting-edge technology while providing unmatched patient care is at the heart of what makes Fishers smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial.”

Fishers City Candidate Filings Out To A Fast Start

Today is only the second day of candidate filings for Hamilton County municipal elections, but we already have some news to report.

Mike Colby, a former member of the Fishers Town Council, has announced his candidacy for the Northwest Council District, also referred to as District 2.  Incumbent Selina Stoller is expected to run for reelection in that same district.

In a Facebook post announcing his candidacy, Colby cited his experience as a town councilor in Fishers and his role as the President of the River Glen Homeowners Association.   He listed the main issues of his campaign as transportation and economic development for the Fishers community. His release also says the council  needs “to continue to focus our community’s quality of life programs in order to bring more jobs to Fishers.”

Colby is an Army veteran and served in Vietnam.

In another race, Jackie Bowen has officially filed her candidacy for Fishers City Clerk.  The incumbent clerk, Jennifer Kehl, is expected to run for another term.

Fishers got back on the winning track Tuesday, toughing out a 59-55 win at Arsenal

The Tigers used balanced scoring to hold an early lead in the first half, going up
10-8 in the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. Five different players scored in
each quarter.

Fishers led 42-37 after three quarters, with Jeff Simmons and Terry Hicks each
contributing five points in that period. The Tigers then held on in the fourth, thanks to
an 11-of-14 effort from the free throw ling.

Hicks and Willie Jackson were both 4-for-4 from the line in that quarter.

Hicks finished the game with 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Simmons
added 14 points, while Jackson scored 13.

The New Fishers Arts & Culture Commission

Members of the commission in their first meeting

The City of Fishers has taken a major step forward in encouraging the arts and artists with the formation of the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission.  The City Council approved the creation of this group and Mayor Scott Fadness appointed its seven members.

Tuesday night, the commission got down to work.

This session was more orientation than anything else, with city staff members explaining how they will support the commission in its work.

Tony Bagato, Director of Planning and Zoning for the city, explained how the commission will be involved in the art work featured in new construction of commercial developments, such as the Flexware building now under construction next the the library and the large development under construction near I-69 & 116th Street, The Yard.

Commission members had a number of questions and listened carefully to the staff briefings.

The commission will vote on a president and vice president at its first official meeting set for March 12th.

This commission begins a new era of arts and cultural activism in Fishers.  With the downtown Nickel Plate District designated by the state as an Indiana cultural district, there is much to do.

Here are the members of the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission:

–Cecilia Coble, City of Fishers Councilwoman
–David Decker, Owner of ACo and Co-Founder of Hub & Spoke
–Jeremiah Follis, Teacher at HSE High School, Founder of Olio Productions, and Sculptor

YMI Sends Out An S.O.S. – We Need Mentors

The Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI) is a nonprofit group with the mission of providing mentors for students in the Hamilton Southeastern Schools in need of an adult mentor.

Alison Gatz, Executive Director for YMI, tells LarryInFishers the group is in dire need of more volunteers willing to mentor young people in our local schools for about an hour a week.  Mentors are needed for Intermediate, Junior High and High School Students throughout the local area.  Some students have been waiting 2-3 months for a mentor.

Applying to be a mentor is very easy, just use this link.

To learn more about YMI, listen to the podcast I recorded with Alison Gatz at the link below.  The podcast is about 30 minutes long.

This is your opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young person in your local community.

Another Election Season Is Upon Us

After an off-year (non-presidential) election cycle in 2018, in Indiana, 2019 brings us yet another election cycle, this time at the municipal level.

In Fishers, a number of offices will be up for election.  Those offices include mayor, all 9 council seats, the city clerk and city judge.

Mayor Scott Fadness has been clear that he plans to run for another term.  So far, the only person indicating interest in challenging Fishers’ incumbent mayor is Logan Day, but he has not announced any candidacy up to this point.

In the council races, it is expected that all 9 members of the current council plan to run for re-election.  One person has expressed interest in challenging an incumbent in one council district seat, but so far, there have been few rumblings about other challengers for the council.

The first round of balloting will be the May 7th primary.  Those wanting their name placed on the ballot will begin filing their candidate paperwork at the Hamilton County Election Office in Noblesville beginning Wednesday, January 9th.  The deadline to file for office in the primary of either political party will be noon on Friday, February 8th.

In the past, the Republican primary election has chosen those likely to serve in office.  Democrats have started organizing and presented more candidates on the ballot in county and township elections last year.  It will be interesting to see how many Democrats file to run in the Fishers city election this year.

Keep in mind that local government is very important.  In past municipal elections, voter turnout has been very low.  I would encourage everyone of voting age in the City of Fishers to pay attention to this city election.  With the primary set for May 7th, candidates will begin their primary campaigns in March and April.  Take the time and effort to find out about the candidates.  I will strive to do my part and cover the election as best I can.  The rest is up to you.
